— A Day in the Life

December 2022: A 22-year-old Palestinian man killed after being shot during a struggle with an Israeli police officer.

January 2023: A 16-year-old Palestinian riddled with bullets at his doorstep during an army raid.

This year has begun just as the last one ended: with the death of a Palestinian at the hands of Israeli occupation forces.Ammar Hadi Mufleh, 22, was killed while struggling with an Israeli border police officer. In the midst of the altercation, the officer drew his weapon and shot him five times at point-blank range. His body was left agonizing on the sidewalk while bystanders pleaded for help to no avail. Israeli authorities seized the young man's body and did not return it for 21 days. His family was finally able to say goodbye on the last day of the year.

This was how 2022 came to a close—one of the bloodiest years in the West Bank in the last two decades. 142 Palestinians were killed by Israeli occupation forces in the occupied territories, 34 of whom were minors.Days later, during a raid on the Balata refugee camp, 16-year-old Amer Abu Zeitoun was out on the street. Terrified by the sound of army gunfire, he tried to run back home. He didn’t make it. As he turned a corner, he encountered an Israeli soldier who did not hesitate to shoot him multiple times in the head and torso. Amer couldn't even take three steps before his lifeless body collapsed to the ground.

The year 2023 began with the death of yet another Palestinian at the hands of the Israeli army—a year that, to this day, is proving to be even worse than the last.
